AHL Report Headlines: Wednesday January 3, 2018

  On this day in hockey history1939 — Hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Hull is born in Point Anne, Ontario. Hull joined the Chicago Blackhawks in 1957 at the age of 18 and would go on to score more then 600 goals with the team. 1929 — Boston Bruins blueliner Eddie Shore drives through blizzard conditions to Montreal, arriving just before the start of the game. He would score the only goal in a victory over the Maroons.

► Lack heads to Binghamton

  • The New Jersey Devils acquired goaltender Eddie Lack from the Calgary Flames in exchange for defenseman Dalton Prout. Lack has been assigned to the AHL’s Binghamton Devils; Prout will report to the AHL’s Stockton Heat.

    ► AHL Players in World Juniors

  • Five AHL players are participating in the under-20 tournament that started last week in Buffalo and runs through Jan. 5. Sweden features forward Alexander Nylander (Rochester) and defenseman Timothy Liljegren (Toronto). Filip Chytil (Hartford) of the Czech Republic, Russian prospect Klim Kostin (San Antonio), and Janne Kuokkanen (Charlotte) of Finland are the other participating AHL forwards.

► The loss of a legend

  • Johnny Bower, the winningest goaltender in American Hockey League history and a charter member of the AHL Hall of Fame, passed away on last Tuesday. He was 93.
  • Born in Saskatchewan, Johnny Bower made his pro debut with the AHL’s Cleveland Barons in 1945 and went on to win four Calder Cups and three league MVP awards. He led the AHL in wins five times and was named to six postseason AHL All-Star Teams, including five first-team selections. He also won the Harry “Hap” Holmes Award (then given to the goaltender with the lowest goals-against average in the league) on three occasions.
