St. John’s IceCaps Media Release

ST. JOHN’S, NL (July 11, 2016) The St. John’s IceCaps organization confirmed today it remains committed to providing elite-level hockey to fans in Newfoundland and Labrador, despite the announcement today by the Montreal Canadiens that they plan to move their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate to Laval, Quebec in the fall of 2017.

“I can assure season ticket-holders, corporate partners and hockey fans throughout Newfoundland and Labrador we were fully aware and prepared for today’s announcement by the Canadiens and we have been actively seeking a new AHL partner and exploring options with other leagues for some time now,” said IceCaps President and CEO Danny Williams.

“Today’s news is not really ‘news’ as our affiliation contract with the Canadiens is for two years with an option for a third, if the new arena being constructed in Laval is delayed. Construction is right on time which is public knowledge, so therefore there is no third year for us.”

Williams also took the opportunity to thank the Canadiens organization and hockey fans of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“As expected, the Canadiens organization has been first class to work with. We are thrilled about the upcoming season and the exciting Canadiens prospects who will grace Mile One Centre ice this year. We fully expect our incredible fans and corporate partners will embrace the opportunity to enjoy a final season as the top affiliate of hockey’s most legendary franchise.”
