Game Report
What a finish! The IceCaps didn’t have much time to regroup after falling to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Friday night 4-2, but they dug deep and came back for their next-day rematch ready to take the home team to task.
The opening frame looked similar to the previous night, with both teams applying pressure and successfully killing off a penalty here and there. Robert Hagg opened the scoring for the Phantoms less than a minute before the end of the period.
But 2:33 into the second period was when Nikita Scherbak buried a puck off a feed from Tom Parisi and Charles Hudon to even the score and breathe some energy into the IceCaps bench. Not long after that, Chris Terry connected with Zach Redmond and Scherbak on the power play to put his team up 2-1. Mark MacMillan then added to the IceCaps score with a textbook goal off a solid cross-crease pass from Anthony Camara and Hudon.
The Phantoms drew within one goal by the end of the period, but the IceCaps kept their opponents at bay, even into the third period when Lehigh Valley shot an equalizer home late in the game. Despite immense defensive zone pressure, the Phantoms couldn’t find a way through to Yann Danis, and Hudon took a feed from Scherbak in the corner to pot the game winner.
The IceCaps now head home to St. John’s to prepare for two series this week against the Binghamton Senators and Syracuse Crunch.
