Game Report

On this Pennsylvania road trip, the IceCaps managed to down the top-ranked team in the AHL twice, including blanking them 4-0 on Wednesday night.  After that, the St. John’s team traveled down the road about an hour to visit the Lehigh Valley Phantoms who currently sit in second place league-wide.

After a fairly well-performed first period which saw Bobby Farnham get the scoring started with the help of Julien Brouillette and Daniel Audette, and the IceCaps got a good break by having a Phantoms goal waived off for contact with Charlie Lindgren, they entered the second period tied 1-1 with Lehigh Valley.

That’s where the wheels started to come off in this game a bit.  The Phantoms outshot the IceCaps 18-10 in the middle frame, and controlled the play for much of the rest of the game.  Despite getting five opportunities on the man advantage, St. John’s couldn’t muster a power play goal and overall the special teams performance for the IceCaps was generally disappointing.

Charles Hudon did notch an unassisted goal in the second period, but the Phantoms answered with a power play goal of their own to even the score yet again.  The final frame was all Lehigh Valley.  Bad turnovers and zone entries left the IceCaps constantly chasing the puck.

Lindgren came up big in the third with a monstrous save on a Chris Connor penalty shot, but then, with less than four minutes to overtime, Mark Alt found mesh for his first goal of the season.  The Phantoms put the game away a minute later with an empty-netter on what could have been considered a potential icing call.

The IceCaps rematch the Phantoms on Saturday night for their final game of this road trip, before heading back to St. John’s to face the Binghamton Senators and Syracuse Crunch later this week.
