Game ReportGame Report written by Chris G The Rocket were facing the Moose for the third time in this four-game series. The teams split the first two contests, with Laval winning Friday’s game 1-0. Joel Bouchard made a couple of changes to his lineup. Cameron Hillis and Hayden Verbeek were inserted. It was Verbeek’s first game of the season. Arsen Khisamutdinov and Liam Hawel were scratched.
Cayden Primeau got the start for a second consecutive match after recording his first shutout of the season, after making 19 saves.
First PeriodIt was a defensive duel to start this match. Laval received an early power play opportunity, but it was Manitoba that got the chances during the two minutes. The first shot on goal of the afternoon came from the Moose 7:33 into the game.
The Rocket took consecutive penalties, and the Moose capitalized to open the scoring. While Josh Brook was in the penalty box, Cole Perfetti setup Kristian Vesalainen for a one-timer from the faceoff cirle that beat Primeau glove side.
Joseph Blandisi took Laval’s first shot on goal with 3:15 remaining to play.
In the following minute, Corey Schueneman won a battle behind Manitoba’s net before finding Rafael Harvey-Pinard in the crease for the tying goal. On that play, Jesse Ylonen was hit into the boards by Jimmy Oligny and left the game.
Second PeriodLaval started the middle frame with a couple of dangerous opportunities. Firstly, the fourth minute, Ryan Poehling set up Joel Teasdale for a one-timer from the faceoff circle that was stopped by Mikhail Berdin with his blocker.
Secondly, Jordan Weal had a breakaway, but he wasn’t able to get the puck behind Berdin.
Later in the period, Oligny delivered a hard hit on Weal that knocked him out for a few moments. Michael Pezzetta had enough of Oligny’s physicality and dropped the gloves for a bout. Prior to the start of the frame, Pezzetta had some words with Oligny, certainly not appreciating the hit on Ylonen.
The Moose took the lead again when Cale Fleury lost the puck behind his own net, and it led to Kristian Reichel being wide open to score with 3:52 remaining.
Third PeriodThe Moose’s indiscipline allowed the Rocket to get back into the game. With 5:59 remaining in regulation, Poehling picked up a rebound in the crease to score with the extra attacker.
It took 11 seconds to tie the game as Pezzetta’s aggressive forecheck deep in Moose’s zone caused a turnover and that allowed Verbeek to tie the game from the ensuing faceoff.
Moments later, Dylan Samberg delivered a hard body check deep in Manitoba’s zone on Jan Mysak. Mysak was on the ice for a few minutes before exiting, and didn’t return for the balance of the contest.
Jordan Weal gave his team their first lead of the afternoon, after finding a loose puck and beat Berdin with a shot from the top of the faceoff circle.
Blandisi sealed the comeback with an empty net goal with 23 seconds remaining to give Laval 5-3 victory.
What’s Next?The Rocket showed resilience to score three goals in 2:13 for the win, despite losing Ylonen and Mysak during the game. It was Primeau’s sixth consecutive win in goal.
The four-games series concludes on Tuesday at 5:00pm eastern.
