Game Report
On a snowy, blustery winter evening in St. John’s, the IceCaps and a few hundred fans who braved the weather welcomed the Binghamton Senators to Mile One Centre for the first in a back-to-back series against the division rivals.
The opening frame left much to be desired, as the IceCaps only mustered two shots on goal in the first couple of minutes and then were held without a shot until the next period. During that time, the Senators managed to score two quick goals and put the IceCaps back on their heels.
The second period was more of the same, although the IceCaps’ sticks woke up quite a bit, outshooting the Senators 15-3 in the period. Michael McCarron was in the right place for a Binghamton turnover near the blue line and, on a breakaway, drove the net hard, elevating the puck over Chris Driedger. After review, however, the officials ruled no goal and St. John’s went back to work still scoreless.
Driedger didn’t get any breaks in the third period, as the IceCaps peppered him with an additional 26 shots on goal. McCarron, Nikita Scherbak, Chris Terry, and Max Friberg were strong on their shifts and relentless on the puck.
The power play unit seemed to struggle as they weren’t able to convert on the man advantage all night until Terry fired the puck past Driedger with just over a minute remaining in regulation off a feed from Scherbak and Charles Hudon.
Extra time was pretty back-and-forth for both teams and just when it looked as if the game would go to a shootout, the Senators potted a weird rebound off of Charlie Lindgren to win the game with 31 seconds remaining.
The IceCaps will regroup and face the Senators once again on Wednesday night at Mile One Centre.
