Game Report

Game Report written by Chris G

The Utica Comets were in Laval on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd at Place Bell. Utica had won four of the previous six games between the teams this season. Both teams lost on Friday, Laval 3-0 against Toronto, and Utica 4-0 against Syracuse.

The Rocket were looking to stop their losing streak at three games, while the Comets had lost five of their last six games.

Charlie Lindgren got the start in goal, but no other changes were made to Laval’s lineup. Alex Belzile missed a second consecutive game due to the flu.

The Comets scored the only goal of the first period as Brendan Woods won a foot race against Cale Fleury which led to a 2-on-1, where Kole Lind scored with a blocker side wrist shot. Laval’s highlights of the period were big hits delivered by David Sklenicka and Brett Lernout.

Fleury scored Laval’s first goal with a wrist shot from the point during a power play at 6:22 of the second period. That was Laval’s first goal in over four periods of play.

The Comets took the lead back with 48 seconds remaining in the period during a delayed penalty call against the Rocket, as Vincent Arseneau redirected Jalen Chatfield’s pass from in front of the net.

Joel Bouchard made some changes to the lines and Laval had several scoring chances in the second, including Joe Cox and Jake Evans on a 2-on-1 during a penalty kill. Brendan Woods gave his team a 3-1 lead 5:40 into the third period with a wrist shot past Lindgren.

As we have seen throughout the season, Laval stayed in the game until the end. At 11:21, Alexandre Alain scored the team’s second power play goal of the night as he picked up a loose puck in the crease.

With 3:45 remaining in the period, Alexandre Grenier tied the game by scoring while being on his knees in front of the net. With the sold out crowd still buzzing, Joe Cox scored his first AHL goal 34 seconds later to give his team their first lead of the game.

Lukas Vejdemo delivered the final blow to the Comets by scoring into an empty net. It was his second point of the night, his seventh point in the last seven games.

Grenier and Fleury led the way in Laval’s comeback win by getting one goal and two assists each. Syracuse will be at Place Bell on Wednesday at 7:30pm ET to face Laval. Listen in the player below for full post-game audio with coach Bouchard and key players from the game.
