That’s not to say that the Minnesota Duluth hockey team looked slow by any means, but their steady and unwavering persistent play helped lift them to the next level of the NCAA Midwest Regionals held in Allentown, PA. One player of note for local fans was Philadelphia Flyers prospect Noah Cates, playing on the top line for UMD. The PPL Center was filled with plenty of noise for their opponents, the Bowling Green Falcons, but crowd noise didn’t determine the outcome of this game. Both teams played the first period pretty evenly, exchanged a couple of penalties, but couldn’t find the back of the net at either end of the ice. In the second period, with just under four minutes left to play in the frame, the Falcons finally got the scoring started with a quick wrister from the circle by Brandon Kruse, assisted by Max Johnson and Lukas Craggs. The Bulldogs never gave up, though they began to wear down and look a bit tired well into the third period. But the steadily pressed on and started to really ramp up the shots on BGSU’s goaltender. With just 4:01 left in the game, UMD captain Parker Mackay banged in a rebound to tie the game at 1-1, assisted by Cole Koepke. It took almost 12 minutes of overtime play to determine a winner, and it was once again Mackay, assisted by Koepke, to allow the Bulldogs to advance to Sunday’s game. They’ll face the winner of the second game, Quinnipiac, to determine which team will move on to the Frozen Four in Buffalo, NY. Plus/Minus▲ Cole Koepke, Parker Mackay, Mikey Anderson, Dylan Samberg ▼ Nick Swaney, Jesse Jacques |
