On Tuesday, rivals USA and Canada faced off in the first of two games these teams will play against each this week. In the opening period, both teams seemed to spend a few minutes getting their footing. For the Americans, new lines were together in game action for the first time now that the split squads had merged, and it was the debut game for Canada. Discipline was a problem for Team USA right out of the gate, piling up four infractions in the opening 20 minutes of play. Canada was able to convert one of their man advantage opportunities when Kirby Dach (CHI) fed a quick pass in tight back to Joe Veleno (DET) who put the puck past USA netminder Dustin Wolf (CAL). Despite spending a lot of time on the penalty kill, the Americans were busy in the offensive zone, outshooting Canada 14-6 in the period. The third line of Joel Farabee (PHI), Trevor Zegras (ANA), and Cole Caufield (MTL) were especially dangerous, but Canadian goaltender Olivier Rodrigue (EDM) was up to the task. Although Oliver Wahlstrom (NYI) did take a penalty in the opening minute of the second period, it would be the only time Team USA found themselves shorthanded in the period. Canada was able to get pucks on net much more often in this period, however, and outshot the Americans 9-7 in the frame. Dach scored his first goal of the tournament off a nice feed threaded through the slot from Veleno to put Canada up 2-0. At the midway point of the game, Rodrigue headed to the bench as Hunter Jones (MIN) took up his post between the pipes for Team Canada. With just three seconds left in the period, Akil Thomas (LAK) was called for tripping, giving Team USA almost a full power play to begin the third frame. Caufield got his team on the board during the man advantage with an exhilarating top-shelf shot from the circle, but about two minutes later Nolan Foote (TBL) scooped up the puck in the slot and fired a wrister past Wolf to restore Canada’s two-goal lead. With just under 10 minutes left in the game, the Americans found themselves shorthanded yet again and Dach buried a rebound for his second goal of the game. Team USA continued firing the puck, but couldn’t get anything further past the Canadian goaltender. Canada gets right back at it at 1:00 pm ET on Wednesday when they take on Finland, and the USA will regroup and face Sweden at 4:00 pm ET.
