After blanking the Devils in a stunning home opener victory on Saturday night, it was the Phantoms’ turn to visit the Binghamton team in their temporary Newark home. The lineup looked a little more rounded out than last time, with David Kase, Matthew Strome, and Derrick Pouliot coming back from the NHL taxi squad.

First Period

The Phantoms got things started early when Pascal Laberge scored his first goal of the season, cleaning up the puck in the crease. Lehigh Valley would go on to score two more goals in the period: one by Max Willman with a big wrister, and one by Ryan Fitzgerald on a deflection.

In between those goals, the Devils managed to pot one of their own when Fabian Zetterlund deflected a puck past Zane McIntyre. But it was definitely a period tilted in favor of the Phantoms, despite them not having much luck generating shots or even offensive zone time while on the penalty kill.

Second Period

The middle frame was a quintessential dud for Lehigh Valley. They started the period on a carryover penalty kill, and Nick Merkley scooped up a rebound and put the puck over the goal line.

Next, Danick Martel burned his former team when he got a shot off in close while shorthanded on the next Phantoms power play. McIntyre got across and made the initial save, but Martel got the puck up and over the pad to tie the game at 3-3.

Third Period

Things started to look dire for Lehigh Valley when Binghamton took their first lead of the game in the third period, again on a shot that was initial saved by McIntyre but this time it was a rebound that found its way over the goal line.

But with about 10 minutes left in the frame, Linus Sandin found himself in front of the net, catching a puck shot by Pouliot right in the chest. It dropped to the ice in front of him, and Sandin turned and put it through Evan Cormier to tie the game again, 4-4.

The overtime period had some exciting moments, as Kase came oh-so-close to scoring on more than one occasion, but as the minutes ticked down it seemed that this game was destined for a shootout. Willman, however, had another idea. On a short breakaway, with 42 seconds left on the clock, the forward buried his second goal of the game and the game winner.
