Felix Sandstrom was in the net for his season debut with the Phantoms, while Brennan Saulnier and Ralph Cuddemi drew in for Maksim Sushko and Matthew Strome. First PeriodFor the Penguins, Felix Robert picked up right where he left off last night, when he scored his first goal of the season. Robert continued his scoring when he put Wilkes-Barre on the board first with a tally on an odd-man rush. A few minutes later, however, Max Willman extended his scoring streak to four games with a neat little dangle around a defenseman in the slot to tie the game. He was set up with a quick tape-to-tape pass by Zayde Wisdom. Second PeriodJust over a minute into the middle frame, the Penguins restored their one-goal lead when Jordy Bellerive found the back of the net. Willman potted his second goal of the night, tying the game yet again, when he drove through the slot and tossed a bouncing puck on net. It seemed to surprise Shane Starrett a bit when it went past him. The Phantoms took their first lead of the night when Ryan Fitzgerald backhanded the puck off a Cal O’Reilly pass on the power play. Every time Lehigh Valley seemed to pick up some steam, the Penguins were right there to pull them back down. Nick Schilkey deflected a puck past Sandstrom toward the end of the period to leave things tied at 4-4 heading into intermission. Third PeriodFor the second time tonight, the Penguins got a quick goal to start the period, this time just 27 seconds into the frame. It put the Phantoms on their heels and left them chasing the play for much of the period. But as luck would have it, the long-suffering power play came through for the second time in this game when Fitzgerald skated the puck into the slot and tossed it over to Wisdom who put it right past Starrett. That goal forced another Phantoms overtime, but Frederick Gaudreau sealed it for the Pens just 40 seconds into the extra minutes. What’s Next?It was a solid effort by the Phantoms to keep battling back and at least get a point out of a game that at time felt very tilted toward the Penguins. Lehigh Valley struggled with turnovers and giveaways a lot in this game. On the injury front, Logan Day left the game in the second period after sliding awkwardly into the boards, with his back making impact. He did not return and Scott Gordon said he’ll be evaluated tomorrow.Plus / Minus▲ Zayde Wisdom, Max Willman, Ryan Fitzgerald, Cal O’Reilly ▼ Egor Zamula, Linus Hogberg, Chris Mueller |
