Game Report

Game Report written by Amy Johnson

Coming off of a successful weekend at home, where the Rocket downed the Utica Comets on Saturday night, Laval found themselves with another lengthy week of practice before hitting the road for their weekend matchups.

This road trip begin in Belleville, where the team will face the Senators three times over the course of four days.

First Period

The tone for the weekend was set early, when just minutes after the opening faceoff, Riley McKay and former teammate Brennan Saulnier dropped the gloves for a rousing bout.

The teams each were guilty of two penalties in the period, including a couple late in the frame, but both benches headed to intermission with a couple of zeroes on the scoreboard.

Second Period

Laval had two additional power play opportunities in the first half of the second period, but couldn’t capitalize on any of them.

Finally, with about 11 minutes left in the frame, the Rocket opened the scoring with a goal by Peter Abbandonato. The Belleville bench seemed to be upset with the officials on the play for missing a couple of calls.

Later in the period, Pierrick Dube extended the Laval lead with a goal of his own, but about a minute later Jonathan Aspirot got the Senators on the board with a quick shot from the slot.

Angus Crookshank added insult to injury with just 1:04 left in the period when he buried his 18th goal of the season, making it 2-2 going into intermission.

Third Period

Belleville got their first lead of the game around the midway through the period when Cayden Primeau went behind the net to play the puck. In the process, a Senators skater tangled with him and Primeau’s glove came off. It seemed to distract him long enough to be delayed in getting back in front of the net, and Crookshank took full advantage.

Moments later, on a delayed penalty, Jacob Bernard-Docker scored his first goal of the season when he snapped the puck into Laval’s net from the top of the slot.

Jean-Francois Houle pulled his goaltender with just over three minutes left in the game, but Egor Sokolov was able to find the empty net to make it 5-2 for Belleville.

With just over a minute left in regulation, William Trudeau scored on a power play to give the Rocket one last boost.

What’s Next?

The Rocket will stay in Belleville to continue this three-game series on Saturday night.
