Game Report

Game Report written by Amy Johnson

The Rocket’s three-game series in Belleville didn’t get off on the right foot Friday night, when the Senators mounted a second half comeback to defeat Laval 5-3.

Jean-Francois Houle was left with few options in terms of shaking things up in the lineup, as the bulk of his roster was already on the ice Friday night. Philippe Desrosiers made his season debut in net on this night, with the coach giving Primeau a night off. At the other end of the ice, Antoine Bibeau was back in net for Belleville.

First Period

The first half of the period was filled with a few penalties, and despite getting two power play opportunities early, Laval couldn’t capitalize on them. On this night, it was Belleville who opened the scoring when Egor Sokolov released a long, floating shot towards the net.

However, Mattias Norlinder got the goal back just over a minute later when he put the puck in the top right corner of the net. Defenseman Madison Bowey followed that with a goal of his own three minutes later, as he went forehand-backhand on Bibeau.

11 seconds later Joel Teasdale took advantage of goaltender gaffe much like Primeau’s in yesterday’s game. With the net wide open and Bibeau late to get back, Teasdale had a clear shot to make it 3-1.

Second Period

The momentum didn’t stick with Laval in the middle frame, however. Robie Jarventie scored less than five minutes into the period off a slick back pass from Angus Crookshank. Later, while on another power play, the Rocket gave up a shorthanded goal from former Laval forward Jake Lucchini. That goal tied the game at 3-3.

But before the teams headed to the second intermission, Brandon Gignac restored the Rocket’s lead. Positioned to the left side of the net, he was in a perfect position to shovel the puck over the goal line after it rebounded off the boards behind the net.

Third Period

Things tightened up quite a bit in the third period, as Belleville mounted pressure in an attempt to tie the game once again. They were successful in doing so when Jarventie scored his second of the night. Desrosiers’ line of sight was blocked by a screen and Jarventie found open space between the Laval goaltender and the post.

In overtime, it was Lucchini who had his turn at scoring a second goal of the evening, and this one would prove to be the game-winner.

What’s Next?

The Rocket have one more chance this weekend to find a victory against the Belleville Senators. They’ll stay put for a 3:00 pm Family Day game at CAA Arena on Monday afternoon.
