On Saturday night, the team visited the Springfield Thunderbirds. Brandon Gignac and Xavier Simoneau were still unavailable due to injury, but Riley McKay returned to the lineup after serving his one-game suspension. In net, Cayden Primeau had a rare night off as Philippe Desrosiers occupied the space between the pipes in just his second start for the Laval Rocket this season. First PeriodTwo penalties just a few minutes into the game set up the teams with four-on-four hockey for 1:54. The Thunderbirds had a good breakaway attempt during the play, but Desrosiers fought it off. After the penalties expired, however, Springfield finally found the back of the net when Martin Frk scored his 24th goal of the season. John Parker-Jones got Laval on the board with just over three minutes left in the period. A puck rebounded out to the forward, who banked it off of Joel Hofer‘s skate blade and into the net. Nolan Yaremko had the primary assist, his first of the season in just his second game played. Second PeriodThe middle frame was about as uneventful as you can get in the AHL. Both teams were guilty of one penalty each, and neither one of them could convert on their power play opportunities.Third PeriodSpringfield came out with notable energy in the third, and finally found a way to begin to crack Desrosiers. Austin Osmanski restored the Thunderbirds’ lead with his first AHL goal, a quick shot from the top of the circle through some traffic. Just over 30 seconds later, Frk scored his second of the night, extending the home team’s lead to two goals. A goal by Hugh McGing about two minutes later put the Rocket in a real hole which would prove difficult to climb out of. When the visiting team got a power play opportunity with about 11:32 left in the game, Jean-Francois Houle pulled his goaltender for an extra attacker – just like he did earlier this week. They didn’t succeed on the power play this time around, and Desrosiers stayed out for a good portion of the remainder of the period. Hofer made two attempts at a goal from his net, and on the second try he hit the post. Immediately after that, Joel Teasdale scored on the power play. Hofer made a third attempt on a goalie goal, and this time hit the opposite post. Frk was there to tap the puck over the line for the hat trick. What’s Next? The Rocket will now head back to Quebec for a few days, before they take to the road for a quick one-game trip to Rochester on Wednesday. They’ll then host the Utica Comets for two games at Place Bell next weekend.Plus / Minus▲ ▼ Madison Bowey, Mitchell Stephens, Lucas Condotta, Olivier Galipeau |
