The Three Stars of the Week
Written by Robert Rice, AllHabs.net
1. C Michaël Bournival
Bournival has returned to the top of the prospect field as he continues his impressive scoring campaign with the Shawinigan Cataractes. Bournival scored a goal in his first game of the week on Wednesday night, his 24th in 27 games in an eventual 5-4 shootout loss to Acadie-Bathurst. Bournival would mark two assists on Saturday, including assisting on the game-winning goal in an eventual 5-3 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads. Bournival would finish his week scoring a goal and assist on Sunday, marking the opening goal of the game and later assisting on an insurance marker in a 4-1 victory over Chicoutimi. Bournival has now scored 25 goals in 29 games, leads his team with a 1.59 point per game ratio, which is .51 better than anyone on the Cataractes. Bournival is also 4th in team scoring while playing at least 15 fewer games than anyone ahead of him. Bournival was drafted in the 3rd round, 71st overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2010 Entry Draft and was acquired in exchange for Ryan O’Byrne.
2. D Nathan Beaulieu
Beaulieu of late is finding his lucky number is two as he extended himself to points in four straight games as he perfectly matches his previous week’s production. Beaulieu would score two assists on Saturday to help Saint John to a 5-0 sweep of PEI Rocket. Beaulieu would once more score two assists on Sunday as Saint John rolled over Acadie-Bathurst in a 7-2 victory. Beaulieu’s four assists raised him to his 3rd consecutive 30-assist season in the QMJHL, with a total of 38 points in 41 games, good enough for 9th in league defensive scoring. Beaulieu also became the franchise leader for Saint John in defensive scoring over the weekend with 138 career points. Beaulieu was drafted in the 1st round, 17th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2011 Entry Draft.
3. RW Brendan Gallagher
Gallagher continues to pace himself towards becoming a record-setter for the Vancouver Giants this season as he works his way into the scoring columns. Gallagher began the week with two assists in a 5-4 loss to the Portland Winterhawks on Monday night. Gallagher would make his mark on the Giants franchise on Friday, scoring his 126th career goal, tying the franchise goals record on the team in a 3-2 victory over Everett. Gallagher would add two assists on Saturday night, but the effort would fall short in a 4-2 loss to the Everett Silvertips. Gallagher’s 31 goals have him tied at 12th in the WHL, but he has also played at least 11 fewer games than anyone ahead of him. Gallagher was drafted in the 5th round, 147th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2010 Entry Draft.
On The Radar:
- D Darren Dietz scored a goal and assist for his first 10-goal season and 30-point season in the WHL.
- D Morgan Ellis scored two assists to set a new career high of29 assists in a season and reached his first 40-point season in the QMJHL. He is also 6th overall in league defensive scoring.
- D Jarred Tinordi collected two assists and leads the OHL with +38, he’s also +11 ahead of anyone else on the London Knights.
Question Marks:
- LW Olivier Archambault is out indefinitely with a concussion.
- RW Alexander Avtsin is out with a wrist injury.
- D Brendon Nash is recovering from shoulder surgery.
- LW Steve Quailer is out with sprains in his MCL and ACL.
