Game Report
Just before the start of tonight’s game, the Montreal Canadiens announced that forward Christian Thomas had been traded to Arizona in exchange for one of his former Oshawa Generals teammates, Lucas Lessio. With that news as fresh as the new sheet of ice, the IceCaps got things started with a lot of energy as Mark MacMillan potted his third goal of the season just under two minutes into the game.
St. John’s also managed to stay disciplined in the first period, with only one minor penalty taken by Brandon McNally for hooking. The power play unit wasn’t able to convert on any of it’s four opportunities, but on the other hand the penalty killers also didn’t allow any goals.
The second period was played pretty evenly until Mark Barberio scored his second goal of the year to put the IceCaps ahead by one. Just over a minute later, Mike McCarron tipped in a shot by Josiah Didier to give St. John’s a two-goal lead.
Things started to come undone a bit in the third period with multiple penalties going against the home team. Midway through the period, Albany got within one goal, but the IceCaps tightened up and kept their lead through the final horn.
Zach Fucale faced 46 shots overall on the night and looked confident in the goal crease. Despite have points in the last two games, Jacob de la Rose was a scratch in tonight’s game for unknown reasons.
The IceCaps return to the ice on Wednesday night for the second game in this back-to-back series against the Albany Devils.
