Game Report
After dropping the first two games in this second road trip of the season, the IceCaps stormed into Binghamton Tuesday night hungry for a win. They played a very complete game at both ends of the ice, stayed out of the penalty box for the most part, and had another solid performance by their netminder, Charlie Lindgren.
Nikita Scherbak notched his eighth goal of the season less than a minute into the game with a well-placed wrister, assisted by Charles Hudon. The rest of the opening frame was played very quickly, with St. John’s putting plenty of pressure on the Senators defensemen and goaltender.
In the second period, Binghamton came out hard and put the IceCaps back on their heels for the first few minutes, and managed to get an equalizing goal. But then the visiting team regained their focus and motivation and played with a lot of confidence. David Broll potted his first goal of the season late in the period, regaining the lead for his team.
The third period was just as intense, with Binghamton pressuring and the IceCaps keeping them at bay. More than once Lindgren was called upon to make a spectacular save while the crease-crashers from the home team tried to tie the score.
Stefan Matteau put a puck right through the back of the net, which initially went unnoticed since it traveled cleanly through the mesh, and was finally reviewed after play stopped at the other end of the ice when the Senators rang one off the crossbar. After review, the goal was awarded, with Michael McCarron and Jacob de la Rose earning the assists.
Just over a minute later Hudon put the game away for good with a power play goal assisted by Mark Barberio and Daniel Audette. All lines were producing on this night and the team walked away with good momentum heading into a few tough matchups this weekend.
The team will practice for a couple of days before they hit the ice in Rochester on Friday night where they will play the Americans before heading to Toronto to face the Marlies.
