Game Report
St. John’s hockey clubs are used to taking long road trips, but this year’s holiday road trip will be especially lengthy: one month on the road, with just a few days off for Christmas. The IceCaps kicked it off with a visit to Binghamton to take on the struggling Senators.
The opening frame seemed sluggish, with both teams skating slowly with sloppy overall play. Energy picked up when David Broll potted his second of the season by banging home a rebound. St. John’s didn’t get much of a chance to enjoy their early lead, however, as Guillaume Lepine hurried to the other end of the ice and fired an equalizer past Charlie Lindgren.
The teams traded penalties for a bit before Chris Terry sent a laser slapshot into the Senators net on the man advantage. Terry ranks second in the league for power play goals.
In the second period, the IceCaps seemed to fall into their habit of slowing down and sitting back a bit. Binghamton outshot St. John’s in every period, and the visiting team couldn’t get a puck past Matt O’Connor in the middle frame but the Senators managed to tie the game at 2-2 before intermission.
Despite a dominating performance to start the third period, the Senators managed to get a go-ahead goal. The power play unit came up strong again for the IceCaps, however, with Sven Andrighetto tying the game off a feed from Terry and Mark Barberio.
The game required extra minutes to determine a winner, and the Senators seemed to control the puck for most of the time. Max McCormick back-handed a puck in the crease over Lindgren’s shoulder to end the game.
Charles Hudon took a hard hit by Terry late in the game and briefly left the ice, but returned a few minutes later. Nikita Scherbak remains out on injury, however Sylvain Lefebvre estimates he’ll be returning sometime after the Christmas holiday.
The IceCaps have a day of practice on Thursday, before continuing their road trip on Friday night in Utica, NY.
