Game Report

It’s been a few days since the emotional and gritty game against the Syracuse Crunch, but the IceCaps, playing without their captain who was out with the flu, seemed to be suffering from some of the aftereffects of the loss.

The Albany Devils wasted no time getting the first goal, just over a minute into the game. Jacob de la Rose had a couple of good chances in front of the net, but couldn’t get the puck to cross the goal line.

In the second period, the Devils took just over 30 seconds to score again.  Then Nikita Scherbak tallied his tenth goal of the season to get his team on the board.  St. John’s couldn’t celebrate for long, however, as Albany regained their two-goal lead just 36 seconds later.

Blake Pietila notched a power play goal a couple of minutes later, and the floodgates were officially open.  But the IceCaps did show some determination, with Brett Lernout firing a puck past Ken Appleby for his first of the season.  Josiah Didier demonstrated grit and sacrifice as he continued to block shot after shot, as he has done in many recent games, but after a couple of quick blocks in the second period Didier went down the tunnel to the dressing room and did not return to the game.

Late in the second period, Blake Coleman scored his second of the night and Charlie Lindgren was replaced with Yann Danis in the crease.  The IceCaps headed to the dressing room trailing 6-2 at intermission.

The third period seemed to move slowly, with no additional scoring taking place despite the IceCaps getting a couple of power play opportunities late in the game.

The IceCaps will next head to Binghamton to face off against the Senators before traveling back to Syracuse on Saturday night.
