Game Report

The IceCaps got back to work in the second of two games between them and the Binghamton Senators. St. John’s got off to an energetic start and looked very good in the opening minute. However just 2:14 in, after Tom Parisi lost an edge on a Senators rush, Jack Rodewald went in on Yann Danis all alone. He deked around Danis and flipped the puck into the net, giving Binghamton the early lead.

The IceCaps struck back, courtesy of their fourth line. After some great extended pressure by Bobby Farnham, Anthony Camara and the goal-scorer Yannick Veilleux, St. John’s got right back in the game. But just over three minutes later, after a Stefan Matteau interference penalty, the Senators restored their lead with a Max McCormick deflection off a Mike Blunden shot. The IceCaps headed to the dressing room trailing 2-1.

The second period was a little more encouraging for the IceCaps. Just over four minutes into the frame, Charles Hudon scored a beauty over the shoulder of Andrew Hammond, tying the game at 2-2. Unfortunately, it was short-lived as discipline bit the IceCaps again. This time Jason Akeson scored on the man advantage, restoring the Binghamton lead.

Later in the period, the Sens added to their lead on an odd-man rush. It was Akeson sliding it over to Phil Varone who beat a helpless Danis, doubling the Binghamton lead. At the conclusion of 40 minutes, the IceCaps found themselves trailing the Senators 4-2.

The third period of play got off to a terrible start for the IceCaps. Just 19 seconds into the play, Akeson scored his second of the night to stretch the Senators lead to 5-2. St. John’s did not give up though. First it was Stefan Matteau scoring a strange goal that bounced high off the glass and off a Senators defenseman and into the net behind Hammond to make it 5-3. Then just under 12 minutes later, Daniel Carr scored with the extra man to make it 5-4, bringing the IceCaps within one goal.

The IceCaps came so very close to tying it up at 5-5 when Chris Terry fired a one-timer at Hammond, who somehow sprawled across to rob him with his glove and keep the score at 5-4. That was as close as the ‘Caps came to a full comeback, as the Senators bested them for the second night in a row.

The IceCaps now have two days off to refocus before their two-game series with the Syracuse Crunch takes place at Mile One Centre over the weekend.
