Game Report

After a tremendous shutout win in Rochester on the previous night, the IceCaps took the ice at Ricoh Coliseum early Saturday evening for the first of a back-to-back against the Toronto Marlies.  For Julien Brouillette, the game marked his 350th career AHL game; Charlie Lindgren returned to the goal crease yet again after a standout performance the night before.

The first period was reminiscent of the prior game’s opening frame; both teams played fairly evenly and St. John’s seemed to take a couple of bad penalties.  The difference this time was that Toronto was able to capitalize on one of those opportunities and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.  The Marlies also seemed to control play a bit more than the visiting team, not giving the IceCaps much space to work with.

In the second period, the Marlies continued to add to their score, eventually getting to 3-0.  Bobby Farnham then dropped the gloves with Steve Oleksy in a hard-hitting fight which seemed to stir the IceCaps bench.  Shortly after that, Keegan Lowe ripped a slap shot from the blue line for his fourth goal of the season, his first with St. John’s.

The IceCaps managed to stop the bleeding in the third period in terms of goals against, but the power play unit (despite being filled with top talent) couldn’t solve Antoine Bibeau in any of their man advantage opportunities.  Nikita Scherbak went in hard to the net a couple of times, but was denied each time. St. John’s had moments of good hockey, but didn’t play a complete 60 minutes to mount a comeback.

St. John’s will complete their three-in-three on Sunday in an afternoon matinee rematch against the Toronto Marlies.
