Game Report
Coach Sylvain Lefebvre told our team in Rochester on Friday night that their win against the Americans was good, but now he was hoping they could string together some victories to get momentum going. And that’s exactly what his athletes did on Saturday night when they returned to Syracuse.
The first period against the Crunch was nothing if not fast. Both teams flew back and forth across the ice sheet in a seemingly non-stop flurry of action. Syracuse was the only team to serve penalties for the first period and a half, a vital aspect in St. John’s game after the last game between these two groups.
Syracuse lit the lamp first, but Chris Terry soon scored an equalizer with the help of Charles Hudon and Nikita Scherbak. Then in the second period, on the first penalty kill for the IceCaps, Josiah Didier tossed the puck high in the air to clear it out of the defensive zone and right to the stick of a surging Jacob de la Rose. De la Rose skated hard to the net and wristed a short-handed goal past goaltender Mike McKenna.
That’s when the physicality reared its head again, leading Didier to sit in the box for slashing and roughing while Keegan Lowe headed down the tunnel to serve a five minute fighting penalty.
In the third period, Syracuse came after the IceCaps hard and managed to tie things up. The score remained 2-2 through the end of regulation, forcing overtime. It took just under two minutes for Hudon to find some space and fire the puck home for the second win in as many nights.
The IceCaps head back to St. John’s now, where they’ll get some rest and practice days in before the Rochester Americans come to Newfoundland next weekend.
