Game Report

To begin the final road trip of the regular season, the IceCaps traveled to Toronto to take on the Marlies in an early day game on Tuesday which began at 11:00 a.m.  Ricoh Coliseum was filled with school-age children who were there for a special midday hockey game.

The fans, however, seemed to be a little more ready for hockey action than the IceCaps as the first period got off to a sluggish start offensively.  While St. John’s did register eight shots on goal in the period, they came late after going for more than eight minutes without registering a shot.

A couple of bad and/or questionable penalties against the visiting team put the IceCaps penalty killers on display perhaps a bit too often in the opening frame, but the Marlies were unable to take advantage.  Max Friberg raced up the ice on a breakaway and opened the scoring with a nice backhand shot past Garret Sparks.

In the second period, Charles Hudon grabbed a rebound off of Sparks to make it 2-0 for St. John’s, but Toronto soon started to surge.  They scored five unanswered goals, including a snipe by Kerby Rychel less than a minute into the third period.  An empty-netter with 1:16 remaining would close the door for an IceCaps comeback in this one.

The IceCaps now travel to Albany, NY where they will spend a couple of days at practice before taking on the Devils on Friday night.
