Game Report

After suffering a heartbreaking loss on Friday night in Albany, the IceCaps arrived in Binghamton ready to redeem themselves on Saturday night in a must-win game against the Senators.

With Zach Fucale taking up residence in the St. John’s goal crease for the first time since the beginning of the season, the IceCaps began the game with a quick pace and plenty of heavy hitting.  At the other end of the ice, Marcus Hogberg was playing in just his second game for Binghamton.  Stefan Matteau and Max Friberg connected on a few shifts for some good chances on net, but couldn’t finish it to get the puck past Hogberg.

The second period brought the beginning of a shift in St. John’s favor when Jacob de la Rose had some nice stick work in the paint to score a goal on the power play.  Chris Terry and Zach Redmond had the assists on the goal.

Tensions started to mount between the teams as the period wore on; Josiah Didier and Chad Nehring dropped the gloves got cozy in a big scrum after a whistle but the penalty killers performed well no matter how many times an IceCaps player found himself in the penalty box.

Fucale had a highlight-reel save in the second period when Kyle Flanagan raced up ice on a breakaway. Fucale came out of the crease to meet him, sprawled across the ice on his stomach and lifted his right pad at the last second to save the puck which was about to go high into the net.

Leading 1-0, the IceCaps set out to finish the task at hand in the third period and did so with ease.  Redmond scored on the power play not long into the period, followed by the first professional goal by newcomer Niki Petti who was making his professional debut on this night.  Bobby Farnham and Stefan Matteau also potted goals of their own, for which the Senators had no answer.

The IceCaps kept their playoff hopes alive with a 5-0 shutout over Binghamton.  They now travel to Utica to take on another divisional opponent, the Comets, on Sunday afternoon in an equally important game in terms of battling for a playoff berth.
