They were looking to build off of their 2-1 victory in Toronto on Boxing Day. The opening period was a track meet early on in the frame. The Sens and Rocket went back and forth with the Senators generating some good chances. But after a Niki Petti tripping penalty, Petti stepped out of the box and fired a beautiful wrist shot past Andrew Hammond to make it 1-0. Laval added to their lead on the man advantage, Eric Gelinas fired a one-timer past Hammond to make it 2-0. After 20, the Rocket led by two. The second period was a little more even than the opening frame. Though Laval added to their lead early in the frame when Kyle Baun poked a rebound past Hammond, Belleville got it back with less than two minutes remaining in the period. It was Jim O’Brien beating Michael McNiven off a beautiful pass from Max McCormick, to cut into the Rocket lead. After two periods, Laval led 3-1. In the third period, the Senators were the victim of some very questionable penalty calls. After a Jordan Murray holding penalty, Gelinas fired his second of the night past Hammond to make it 4-1. But Belleville did not give up. McCormick scored to cut the Laval lead in half with just over eight minutes remaining in the third. Just over two minutes later, Simon Bourque was nailed for interference and the Sens made him pay. Jack Rodewald banged home the rebound off a Murray point shot to make it 4-3. But that was as close as the Senators got. Belleville did not play a great game but they showed a lot of heart to battle back in the third period. The officials did not help their cause with some questionable calls in the third and it was a factor in this loss.
