The Senators were coming off a loss at the hands of the Laval Rocket and were also looking to get some revenge after a 7-1 thrashing from the Marlies last weekend. The opening frame was a good one for the Senators. From puck drop they looked completely engaged and ready to go against one of the league’s best teams. They got a couple high quality chances in the early going on the man advantage but Garret Sparks made some key saves, notably a left pad save on Ben Sexton that robbed him of what looked like a sure goal. But Belleville kept persisting and eventually they found the back of the net. Andreas Englund busted down the left side before centering to a wide open Tyler Randell who made no mistake for his third goal on the season. After 20 minutes, Belleville led 1-0. In the second period, the Senators kept the pressure on the Marlies. Just over six minutes into the frame, Filip Chlapik took a turnaround wrist shot that Ben Sexton deflected in front to double the Belleville lead. Toronto looked uncomfortable through two periods of play, specifically Sparks who did not look as sharp as usual. Belleville thoroughly outplayed them through two periods and led 2-0 after 40 minutes. The third period was a slightly different story. The Marlies came alive and really pressured the Senators. That pressure paid off when Rinat Valiev fired a one-time blast past Danny Taylor to cut the Belleville lead in half. Toronto did not relent in the dying minutes of the game, but the Senators deserved to win and Jim O’Brien ensured they did with an empty-netter to put the game away. Belleville was the better team in all areas in this win. Taylor was solid when called upon and the skaters did their job against a very tough Toronto squad.
