Game Report

The Belleville Senators were looking to avoid a sixth straight loss when they got back to work when they visited the Utica Comets on Friday. Belleville last played on Tuesday when they lost 4-1 at the hands of the Binghamton Devils. But they were in tough playing the Comets.

The first period was an entertaining period. The teams went back and forth with some good chances to score. Danny Taylor was tested early when Reid Boucher went in all alone on a partial break. Taylor stood tall to keep the Comets off the board. Later in the the period, while on the penalty kill, Ben Sexton had a breakaway opportunity of his own but was hauled down by Patrick Wiercioch. The Senators did not score on the ensuing power play. After one period, the teams were scoreless.

In the second period, the Senators broke the tie. Just over three minutes into the period, Gabriel Gagne wired his 17th of the season past Richard Bachman to give Belleville a 1-0 lead and snap a six-game pointless streak in the process. After that goal, the Comets started to control much of the play but Taylor was sharp in the period, stopping all 10 shots he faced to keep Utica off the scoreboard. After 40 minutes, the Senators led 1-0.

The third period was mostly uneventful. The teams exchanged power play opportunities but neither team was able to capitalize. Taylor was solid once again, not allowing the Comets to get back in the game. The Senators held on to beat the Comets and snap their losing skid in the process.

The Senators finally got back in the win column with a win over a division rival. Taylor was huge stopping 32 and picking up his second shutout of the season. Belleville get right back to work tomorrow night when they return home to host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
