The Three Stars of the Week
1. C Michaël Bournival
Bournival has played far fewer games than most of his fellow CHL prospects this season, but his current season in the Quebec Major Junior League still remains one of the most impressive. Bournival has kept his pace all season as the Cataractes best scorer per games played, capping off his week with a notable three goals and four assists. Bournival began his campaign on Thursday against the Saint John Sea Dogs, assisting on the eventual game-winning goal, than assisting on another and scoring a goal to give Shawinigan a comfortable 4-1 victory. Bournival would improve upon his scoring the next game as he would score two goals and two assists in just under 14 minutes to power Shawinigan to an 8-2 victory over PEI Rocket on Friday. Bournival would go without a point on Saturday however, which also ended a notable scoring streak of seven goals and eleven assists in his previous eight games. Bournival’s most impressive statistic of the season remains his prodigious goal scoring, he now has nineteen goals in twenty games this season. Bournival was drafted in the 3rd round, 71st overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2010 Entry Draft and was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Ryan O’Byrne.
2. D Darren Dietz
After a notable dip in his scoring following an early-season outburst, Dietz has worked his way back into the scoring column of late with the Saskatoon Blades in a heavy 4-game schedule that saw Dietz collect four points. Dietz scored his 7th goal of the season on Wednesday as the Blades took a 2-0 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings. Dietz would miss the scoresheet on Friday, but would add an assist in an 8-6 win on Saturday over the Prince Albert Raiders. Dietz would pick up two more assists on Sunday as the Blades would take a 7-4 decision over the Regina Pats, in his first multi-point game since November 2nd. Dietz’s scoring has had a dramatic increase of late, after a previous 17-game stretch of a goal and four assists, he’s since scored two goals and three assists in his last five games. Dietz was drafted in the 5th round, 138th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2011 Entry Draft.
3. C Louis Leblanc
Leblanc’s split season with the Canadiens has seen him dip quite a bit in the scoring charts with the Hamilton Bulldogs, but Leblanc seems resolved to close the gap of late. Leblanc scored two goals on Friday night to help spur a comeback after the Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 to the Adirondack Phantoms in an eventual 5-4 loss. Leblanc would assist on Hamilton’s only goal in a 3-1 loss on Saturday to the Rochester Americans. Leblanc would fail to make the scoresheet on Sunday against the Toronto Marlies, but his earlier efforts were enough to place him behind only the team’s leading scorers Andreas Engqvist and Aaron Palushaj in point per game efficiency with seven goals, seven assists in 20 games. Leblanc was drafted in the 1st round, 18th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2009 Entry Draft.
On The Radar: G Peter Delmas was called up to Hamilton and won his first start in the AHL, making 26 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Marlies. D Morgan Ellis added a goal and assist for a total of four goals and five assists over six games since he was traded to Shawinigan. RW Patrick Holland scored four assists over his week.
Question Marks: LW Olivier Archambault continues to be the worst minus player on his team by a notable margin at -20. RW Brendan Gallagher is recovering from an upper-body injury and is considered day-to-day. D Brendon Nash is recovering from shoulder surgery. C Daniel Pribyl is recovering from a laceration on his knee. C Dustin Walsh remains out with a leg injury.
