The Laval Rocket hit the road to visit the Toronto Marlies on Sunday, fresh off the Quebec team’s Friday night overtime victory over the Texas Stars.

Jean-Francois Houle made no changes to his lineup on Sunday afternoon, giving Cayden Primeau his third consecutive start in net, with Kevin Poulin backing up.

First Period

The visiting team wasted little time in getting things going against their division rival. Brendan Gignac found Danick Martel in the slot from below the goal line and Martel ripped a snap shot into the back of the Toronto net, past Petr Mrazek. This is Mrazek’s first AHL game of the season, down on a conditioning stint after recovering from injury.

After coming up short on an early power play opportunity, the Rocket then seemed to sit back and the Marlies stepped up their game. Laval were held without a shot for the second half of the period.

Second Period

It took another three minutes into the middle frame before the Rocket got another shot on net, but they made it count. Jean-Sebastien Dea, playing in his 400th career AHL game, was set up by Terrance Amorosa and Jesse Ylonen to extend Laval’s lead to 2-0.

Back-to-back penalties by Charles-David Beaudoin put the Rocket shorthanded for an extended time in the middle of the period. The Marlies did manage to score a goal, but it was between those penalties, during five-on-five play. Brett Seney put Toronto on the board.

Laval’s had a good response and less than two minutes later Martel connected with Brendan Gignac to restore the Rocket’s two-goal lead.

Third Period

Just ten seconds into the third period, the Marlies took a holding penalty and Alex Belzile tallied a power play goal 42 seconds later as the puck bounced off of a Toronto skater and past Mrazek.

Toronto piled on a bit of pressure throughout the final frame, but Primeau was up to the task and kept his team comfortable with a lead. Dea, who had already earned his 250th AHL career point earlier in the game, made it 5-1 for Laval late in the game with an empty-net goal while the Marlies had Mrazek pulled for the extra attacker.
