Game Report

After a disappointing loss Friday night, the Belleville Senators were looking to get some revenge on the Charlotte Checkers. Belleville was also looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Checkers.

They got off to a much better start. After allowing three goals in less than four minutes the night before, the Senators played a good defensive period and got some big saves from Andrew Hammond early on. That allowed them to take the lead later in the period when Ethan Werek batted a Colin White pass out of midair to make it 1-0. After one period of play, the Senators held the lead over Charlotte.

The second period was mostly uneventful. The teams exchanged power play opportunities and some good chances but Hammond and Jeremy Smith stood tall between the pipes to keep both teams off the board in the frame. Hammond continued to stifle the Checkers offense, making eight stops in the frame to keep it 1-0 for the Senators after two.

But the third period was a different story. The Senators had their chances early in the period to add to their lead, but they did not capitalize. It came back to haunt them as Phil Di Giuseppe scored a power play marker over the shoulder of Hammond to tie the game, 1-1.

Then with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Valentin Zykov forced Thomas Chabot to turn it over in the Charlotte zone and went in all alone on Hammond. He put it through the five-hole of Hammond to give the Checkers their first lead of the night. That was all they needed as they came from behind to beat the Senators 2-1.

The Senators dropped this heart-breaker, surrendering two unanswered goals in the third period, squandering a great performance from Hammond in the process. Belleville get back to work Wednesday when the Binghamton Devils come to town.
