Game Report

The IceCaps and Comets reacquainted themselves Wednesday night in the second game of their back-to-back series. After St. John’s and Utica combined for three goals in the first period the night before, the first period of this game was a completely different story. Though the sides exchanged power plays, with the IceCaps a perfect three-for-three on the penalty kill in the period, the teams did not crack Yann Danis or Richard Bachman in the opening frame. The teams concluded 20 minutes of play scoreless.

The second period offered a little more offense as both sides solved the opposing goalies. Michael McCarron opened the scoring for the IceCaps, banging home the rebound off a Chris Terry shot, making it 1-0 St. John’s. Their lead did not last long though, as Wacey Hamilton evened things up for the Comets, beating a helpless Danis. Less than a minute later, Borna Rendulic gave Utica the lead, firing it past Danis in the slot. The IceCaps headed to the dressing room facing a 2-1 deficit.

It did not get any easier for the IceCaps to start the third period. They began the frame killing off just over three minutes of a Bobby Farnham double-minor he took in the last minute of the second period. Utica made him pay in the form of a Cody Kunyk goal from Colby Robak. It was Kunyk’s third goal in two games, and it silenced the home crowd.

St. John’s dropped both games of the series, losing this one 3-1. Though the IceCaps outshot Utica 33-25, Bachman was solid once again for the Comets. The ‘Caps have some time to regroup from this series before they get back to work Saturday, when they begin a series with the Albany Devils.
