Charlie Lindgren returned to the net on this night, but Jake Evans remained sidelined with an injury. In the opening period the Phantoms took control early on when their first shot on goal, by Philippe Myers, found it’s way over Lindgren’s shoulder to put the home team on the board 1-0. Soon after that, Tyrell Goulbourne took exception to a hit on Mark Friedman by Antoine Waked and a high-intensity fight broke out. Waked was assessed a two-minute penalty for charging, but Goulbourne received a two-minute instigator penalty, a five-minute fighting major and a ten-minute misconduct. Waked played a few more shifts, but then did not return to the game in the second period. With less than a minute remaining in the first period, Brett Lernout blasted the puck from the point to even the score at 1-1 heading into intermission. That’s when the penalty trouble started to bite back on Laval. Despite only having one penalty to kill in the second period, the Rocket gave up a goal while the Phantoms had the man advantage, and then a brief five-on-three in the third period allowed Lehigh Valley to take a two-goal lead. Byron Froese managed to get his team back within a goal after he found the back of the net with a power play goal of his own, but the Rocket couldn’t find another equalizer to sneak past a very inexperienced Branden Komm in Lehigh Valley’s crease. The Rocket now head to Pennsylvania to take on the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday night, followed by the Hershey Bears on Saturday.
