They began their five-game roadtrip in Utica for a Friday night tilt with the Comets. The first period was mostly uneventful. The teams exchanged chances and power play opportunities, but Danny Taylor and Thatcher Demko stood tall in the opening frame. Specifically Taylor who faced significant pressure in the closing moments of the period. He made a beautiful sprawling save on Jayson Megna to keep it scoreless and send the teams to the dressing rooms tied. But the second period was a completely different story. It was all Comets and the Senators put up little resistance. Just over two minutes into the frame, Reid Boucher fired a beautiful one-time blast over the shoulder of Taylor, making it 1-0. They did not take long to add to their lead as Philip Holm doubled the Comets lead just two minutes later. The onslaught continued and again just two minutes later the Comets scored. This time it was Michael Chaput on the man advantage, prompting Kurt Kleinendorst to call his timeout. But it had little effect as the Comets scored again before the period was through. Ashton Sautner fired one past Taylor to make it 4-0. After 40 minutes of play, Belleville trailed by four. The third period brought more of the same. Just 39 seconds in, Megna was sprung on a breakaway by Chaput. He made no mistake to make it 5-0. The Senators did crack Demko with a power play goal from Gabriel Gagne, but the Comets added two more goals from Boucher and Griffen Molino to put the game away. Belleville was outplayed by the Comets in their first of five games on the road, losing 7-1 in a penalty-filled affair. The Senators have a few days to think about what went wrong in this game, with their next encounter slated for Tuesday against the Charlotte Checkers. ▲ ▼ Patrick Sieloff, Jim O’Brien, Erik Burgdoerfer |
