The first period buzzed with energy as both teams sped across the ice, and visited the penalty box a fair number of times. On one of Belleville’s penalties, Brett Lernout scored the first goal of the day on a play set up by Yannick Veilleux and Daniel Audette. Belleville answered that with a power play goal of their own toward the end of the period, potted by Maxime Lajoie. It was the middle frame that got a little…weird. First there was a problem with the ice, so the crew came out to tend to it. Then the game delay was extended by almost 30 minutes as the glass needed attention, sending both benches back to the dressing room. Finally, when play resumed, one stoppage occurred due to two pucks being on the ice at the same time. The Rocket entered the third period down 2-1 and battled to even the score. Goaltender Michael McNiven had plenty of strong saves to keep his team within one goal, and on more than one occasion it seemed like they might tie it up. But the Senators were able to keep them at bay and sealed the victory with an empty-netter. These two team turn right around to play each other again tomorrow in the second and final preseason matchup. The Rocket will likely ice a much different looking roster for that game. ▲ Brett Lernout, Michael McNiven, Yannick Veilleux, Martin Reway ▼ |
