BUFFALO, NY — After losing to Canada 6-0, the Slovakian team had another big challenge to face: the defending gold medalist American junior hockey team. For the US, many fans likely saw this matchup as a sure thing, with the marquee outdoor game against Canada looming ahead on Friday.
But what happened at KeyBank Center on Thursday night proved to be a major upset in the early stages in the tournament. The Slovakian team kept pace with the United States, and kept them out of the net. Despite two goals by Brady Tkachuk and Casey Mittelstadt, the Slovaks answered at each turn and watched their flag being raised after downing the Americans 3-2.
After the game, Lead Correspondent Amy Johnson caught up with a few of the key players from the night, including Habs prospect Ryan Poehling who registered an assist on Tkachuk’s goal. Watch full video and listen to complete audio of interviews below.
In other action, Team Sweden defeated the Czech Republic and our team took some time to speak to top prospect Rasmus Dahlin after the game. That video and audio is also included below.
