The opening period was probably some of the best hockey that’s been played at the tournament thus far this week. Both teams demonstrated high skill, played at an even but intense pace, battled for pucks, and forechecked hard. John Beecher (BOS) was the sole goal-scorer of the period when he took a quick feed from Arthur Kaliyev (LAK) as they rushed the net and put the puck past Olof Lindbom (NYR) on the first shot of the game. Kaliyev continued to shine in the second period as he batted a puck out of the air from Jordan Harris (MTL) and into the net. Physicality and tensions escalated from that point on throughout the frame, particularly when Bobby Brink (PHI) skated through the crease and came into contact with the head of Swedish netminder Lindbom, knocking his mask clean off. Both teams were assessed two roughing minors (and somehow Brink wasn’t a victim of an automatic ejection for illegal check to the head) and Kaliyev found the back of the net again with a quick pull of the trigger in the slot. To begin the third period, Sweden placed Jesper Eliasson (DET) in between the pipes but the change in goaltender didn’t change the momentum built up by the Americans. Blake McLaughlin (ANA) got a puck past Eliasson, followed by a breakaway for Nick Robertson (TOR) in which he put on a slick forehand-backhand performance to deke around the goaltender. Trevor Zegras (ANA) completed the scoring for the USA when he went bar down on Eliasson to give the Americans a 6-0 victory over Sweden.
