Game Report

The second game of the second day of the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase featured two teams who had come up short on the previous day: USA White and Sweden. Both would be looking for their first victory of the tournament on Sunday afternoon.

In the opening period, the pace and intensity levels were noticeably high. Marcus Karlberg started the scoring with a shorthanded goal on a breakaway that beat defender Zac Jones. The USA White team returned the favor with a power play goal by Arthur Kaliyev who potted a rebound close to the net. Although the American team seemed to be doing most of the shooting, Sweden was very effective in forcing turnovers and clogging up the neutral zone.

The second period was filled with penalties as the physicality ramped up on both sides of the ice, with roughing, slashing, and holding minors. K’Andre Miller even found himself in the penalty box for charging as he skated through the Swedish crease and took out netminder Erik Portillo. Despite the Swedes outshooting USA 18-5 in the middle frame, no scoring took place.

After a third period filled with high-pressure, even play, it was the five-minute three-on-three overtime period which brought the biggest drama of the day. About halfway through the extra minutes, Canadiens prospect Jacob Olofsson went hard to the net and managed to push the puck just past goaltender Dustin Wolf as Olofsson went sliding past the crease. The puck danced along the goal line behind Wolf and seemed to be saved by a poke from Blade Jenkins, but upon review the officials deemed it a good goal and a victory for Sweden.

Team Canada arrived at the complex this afternoon and now all teams will take Monday off from game action for practice before Canada and USA face off on Tuesday afternoon.
