ST. JOHN’S, NL – The St. John’s IceCaps today proudly revealed design details of their new Royal Newfoundland Regiment tribute jersey which will be worn during Military Appreciation Weekend, November 25th-26th at Mile One Centre.
The jersey is the second style the IceCaps will use to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont-Hamel – the first were worn last February.
The Royal Newfoundland Regiment are revered for a turning point in Newfoundland and Labrador history: The Battle of the Somme at Beaumont-Hamel, France on July 1, 1916. On that single day, approximately 733 soldiers from Newfoundland and Labrador were killed or injured, devastating a small country and plunging whole communities into mourning.
The new Royal Newfoundland Regiment tribute jersey features the Regiment’s traditional burgundy Caribou-head logo placed above the words “Newfoundland” written in white on a royal blue scroll. The Caribou, long synonymous as an iconic provincial image, was adopted as the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s logo circa 1915.
The base colour of the jersey is cream with wide, royal blue stripes trimmed in burgundy on the sleeves and waist. The sleeves have burgundy cuffs. The jersey shoulders are royal blue, trimmed in burgundy and feature two patches – the silhouette of a solider atop a corporal chevron on the left and an alternate IceCaps logo (used on last season’s tribute jersey), on the right. The font for player name bars will be in royal blue in a new, stylized font and uniform numbers will be royal blue, trimmed in burgundy in a ‘old-fashioned style’, rounded font. The IceCaps will wear socks in this corresponding colour scheme as well.
The new jerseys are expected to arrive from the supplier in mid-November.
Danny Williams, President and CEO of the IceCaps, says the team are proud to help commemorate this important anniversary.
“The Royal Newfoundland Regiment are such a defining part of Newfoundland and Labrador history,” said Mr. Williams. “This new design has a more ‘old-time feel’ to it including the caribou logo; it more closely resembles the sweaters worn by the Regiment hockey team a century ago. We know that our players and fans alike will wear them with great pride.”
Lt. Col. Paul Furlong, Commanding Officer of First Battalion, The Royal Newfoundland Regiment, says his members are honoured the IceCaps will recognize the regiment once more during this commemorative year.
“The Royal Newfoundland Regiment takes great pride in partnering with the IceCaps to mark 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont-Hamel,” said Lt. Col. Furlong. “These new jerseys will continue to help ensure those brave souls who proudly served Newfoundland and Labrador will never be forgotten.”
The IceCaps will wear their new Royal Newfoundland Regiment tribute jerseys November 25th-26thas part of Military Appreciation Weekend festivities when they host the Providence Bruins.
