Game Report

Game Report written by Amy Johnson

The Phantoms came into Saturday night’s home game against Rochester sporting a four-game win streak and looking to keep that momentum going against an Americans team who has struggled to find consistency in the past few weeks.

Head coach Scott Gordon had warned about starting games slowly after Friday night’s matchup, but the Phantoms didn’t waste much time to get on the score board on this night. While on the power play, Greg Carey gave Lehigh Valley an early 1-0 lead when he beat Andrew Hammond, assisted by Cal O’Reilly and Morgan Frost.

Max Willman scored his second goal of the season later in the period when Rochester got caught on a bad change.

In the second period, Misha Vorobyev and James de Haas took back-to-back penalties, but the Phantoms managed to kill both of them off without even allowing Rochester to get a single shot on goal while on the man advantage.

Carey scored his second goal of the night, and his 100th goal as a Phantom, midway through the period to give Lehigh Valley a decently comfortable 3-0 lead.

In the final frame, Rochester finally started applying some forechecking pressure and managed to get some better shots on J-F Berube, but it was too little, too late.  Vorobyev redeemed himself with a power play goal of his own late in the third, assisted by Isaac Ratcliffe and German Rubtsov.

The Phantoms now are on a five-game winning streak, with all five victories coming on home ice this past week. Three of those five wins were shutouts. It’s just the kind of momentum this team needs to build confidence and keep them surging up the standings.
