Game Report

It was far from the ideal start for the IceCaps Tuesday night against the visiting Syracuse Crunch. In the first of two matchups between the squads Syracuse jumped on St. John’s just 43 seconds into the opening period. Matt Taormina scored his fifth of the season and the IceCaps found themselves down a goal early. Almost exactly six minutes later Jeremy Morin doubled the Crunch lead after he banged home the rebound off a Tanner Richard shot, making it 2-0.

St. John’s got one back when Julien Brouillette scored his first of the season, cutting the Crunch lead in half and bringing the ‘Caps back within one. Tempers flared at the 13-minute mark as Jonathan Racine and Henri Ikonen got into a spirited tilt that Racine won decisively. But just two minutes later, Morin would bite the IceCaps once again and made it 3-1 heading to the break.

The second period did not get off to a much better start for St. John’s. Though they did not get scored upon in the first minute, Joel Hanley took a holding penalty that led to Taormina blasting his second of the night past Charlie Lindgren, just over two minutes into the frame. Frustration began to show for the IceCaps; first Phillip Samuelsson took down former IceCap Michael Bournival in front of the St. John’s net and just under five minutes later Stefan Matteau got a match penalty for spearing.

The IceCaps would be unscathed by the infractions and found themselves on back-to-back power plays to end the second period. They would make good on their second chance as captain Max Friberg sniped one over the left shoulder of Wilcox with 9.6 seconds left to bring the ‘Caps back within two and give the home supporters something to cheer about. It came after a huge pad save from Lindgren off a two-on-one. St. John’s headed to the intermission with some momentum.

That was as close as the IceCaps would come, however. Though they came out strong to start the third, Syracuse made Ryan Johnston pay for a high-sticking penalty as Joel Vermin scored his 6^th of the season. After a scrap between Jeremy Gregoire and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond which led to both players being ejected, Syracuse scored again, adding insult to injury. Mike Halmo was the goal scorer.

As mentioned, Matteau and Gregoire were tossed from the game along with Racine who also received a match penalty in the third period.

The ‘Caps will look to bounce back tomorrow night in the second of two meetings between these teams.
