Belleville was looking to win their fourth straight game, after beating Syracuse in their home opener Wednesday night. But the first period did not help their cause. The Checkers scored three goals in less than four minutes to open the game. The first came just over five minutes in, when Nick Schilkey took a a harmless looking wrist shot, but it fooled Danny Taylor to make it 1-0. Then it was Andrew Poturalski jamming home the rebound off a Josiah Dider shot to quickly make it 2-0. Just over a minute later, Phil Di Giuseppe was sprung on a partial break and made no mistake making it 3-0. The Senators looked flat in the first half of the period, but after a Macoy Erkamps fight with Trevor Carrick, they looked to have gotten their legs underneath them in the second half. Despite trailing 3-0 after one period of play, they headed to the second with a little bit of momentum. Though the Senators struck first in the second period with a Jim O’Brien goal coming just past the halfway mark of the frame, it did not take long for Charlotte to get it back. Just seconds later Warren Foegele got one past Taylor to restore the Checkers three-goal lead. Three minutes later, after a turnover from Taylor behind his net, Valentin Zykov fired it into the open net to make it 5-1. After 40 minutes, the Senators trailed by four. The third period began with goalie change, after allowing 5 goals on 27 shots, Taylor was relieved by Andrew Hammond. But it did not make much of a difference. The Checkers kept going and after a strange bounce in front of Hammond, Andrew Miller scored to make it 6-1, putting the game even further out of reach. The Senators dropped the first of the two-game set 6-1. Belleville will look to bounce back tomorrow night in the second game. ▲ ▼ |
