St. John’s IceCaps Media Release

ST. JOHN’S, NL — The Montreal Canadiens announced this afternoon that defenceman Mark Barberio has been claimed on waivers by the Colorado Avalanche.

The Canadiens had attempted to reassign Barberio to the IceCaps but the Avalanche put in a waiver claim and now own the blueliner’s rights. The 26-year-old split the past two seasons between St. John’s and Montreal and despite playing 26 games with the Habs, remained the IceCaps leading scorer among defencemen with 18 points in 20 games.

Barberio was named to the AHL All-Star Game in each season with the IceCaps but was unable to participate as he was playing with the Canadiens at the time of both games.

This latest roster move comes after the Canadiens retuned forward Daniel Carr to the IceCaps yesterday and defenceman Zach Redmond on Tuesday. Both players join the IceCaps for a six-game road trip starting Friday night in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
