BROSSARD, QC. — In what was a highly competitive scrimmage on Monday morning between Team Canada Red and Team Canada White at day two of the Canadian summer evaluation camp in Brossard, a shootout was needed to decide the winner. Team Red, the eventual 3-2 winners, received a shootout goal by Ottawa 67’s forward Sean Monahan, who also scored once during regulation time.

The scrimmage not only saw a lot of intensity from both sides, it was also an indication that everyone invited to this evaluation camp was hungry to impress Team Canada’s brain trust.

Other major storylines included the play of sixteen-year-old Erie Otters forward, Connor McDavid.  McDavid, who was a rare sixteen-year-old invitee, dominated in the offensive zone whenever him and his line mates Max Domi and Sam Reinhart hit the ice for Team White. Not only did McDavid confirm what scouts have been talking about all year, he did so against some of the best eighteen and nineteen year old Canadians in the world.  His patience with the puck, coupled with his ability to see the ice is reminiscent of his role model, Sidney Crosby.  McDavid finished the contest with a penalty shot goal and an assist for the Whites.

Avs 2013 first overall pick Nathan MacKinnon participated in the inter-squad game even though chances are good that he will play in Colorado this season. However, the Lightning’s 3rd overall pick Jonathan Drouin sat out with a sore foot. Habs 2012 draft pick Charles Hudon skated for the red team as he attempts to make the world junior team after missing it due to injury in 2013.

In nets, Habs second round pick Zach Fucale split duties with Winnipeg Jets draft-pick Eric Comrie for Team Red. At the other end, Jake Paterson of the Saginaw Spirit was between the pipes.

Immediately after the scrimmage, Team Canada players showered, answered to some media, had lunch and got back on the bus. The duration of the evaluation camp will be held in Lake Placid through August 10th.
